28-29.12.2005
It turned out that barking on command is the easiest thing for Beti! She learnt it right away and now she barks on command even if she is not motivated with food! The same with “shake”. She likes it so much that she now gives her paw to everybody.
I am a little worried because Beti has been too quiet in the last two days. Is it because we are at work all day and she is simply bored or is it because she looses her teeth, which makes her feel uncomfortable? I have no idea, but she sleeps a lot and doesn’t play pranks too much. Maybe she is not a Wolfdog?;)
27.12.2005
After her first mini vacation Beti pees in the house rarely. She is able to wait a little longer before we go outside. I hope this will keep improving!
Beti is now at this nice age when she understands many things and still doesn’t try to omit the rules.;) She is very obedient and walks close to me during walks. Actually I can even walk her without a leash because she heels when we are in the street. In the forest she runs before me or wants to heel in order to get her treat. Today I almost had to make her go away to play because she kept heeling and wanted her food for that! She also knows that in order to get a treat one has to look into my eyes, not in my hand.:) Unfortunately this will not last forever and I know that soon Beti will start trying to do things her own way…
Today we practiced a little longer. I am beginning to introduce leaving her with a turn not facing the dog. Until now I walked back so that she could see my face. I am also adding two new commands: indicating a hand and barking. I am using the same method to teach her indicating a hand as I used to teach “knee”, which means I use the dog’s willingness to hurry me to give her a treat, but this time she is supposed to put her nose in my hand. The same thing with barking. I obtain the best results in the evening when Beti gets her most delicious meal which she really wants to gobble up.;) I keep her bowl up above her and encourage her to do something. In the end she is so impatient that she starts barking and at that moment part of the food lands in her mouth. After a second or a third time it is really easy – my command, a gesture and Beti’s bark.:))) Of course she still doesn’t understand it, but at least I have the basis.:)
26.12.2005
Beti visited Brodnica, a beautiful town in the Pomeranian area. She met a younger friend GSD there. She played with kids, provoked the passers by to play with her, and didn’t even mind the cold. The rush and noise of the city doesn’t impress or bother her at all. However, she was fascinated with smells on the walls and posts. After an hour of walking downtown and an hour and a half of running in the forest Beti is exhausted and disappears for the rest of the day.;) But how wonderfully she and Amber played! Amber was like a stag: proud and distinguished, Beti chased him like a hare: jumping a somersaulting behind him. On the way back Beti sleeps on my laps. I am so happy she is still so little!
25.12.2005
Beti gets to know the big water! She doesn’t feel like swimming, but is definitely intrigued with the lake. The dogs are crazy. One can see how they missed running! Beti is like a parrot.:) She imitates everything the older dogs do. She walks exactly the same way, smells exactly the same places and even drinks from the same ponds… Amber shows Beti new interesting places. The little lady jumps around him and provokes him. They carry sticks together and dig holes together. The little one definitely had enough running! As usually, we practice a little during a walk. “Come” in a new place is not a problem if you have a delicious chicken with you.:) Beti came even when she got interested in ducks.;)
In the evening I am shocked – Beti doesn’t want to go out. No more walking for today! This is the first time she doesn’t want to leave home. The only thing she dreams about is to eat and sleep.:)
24.12.2005
We ran out of town! We are spending the Christmas Eve in a little house with a fireplace and a big Christmas tree which makes the house smell like forest. It’s so amazingly quiet around! The dogs can feel the Christmas atmosphere. They are excited and happy. There are big bones and other delicious things for the dogs. The most exciting part of the day is an evening walk in the dark.;)
23.12.2005
Our life is now full of nice smells from the kitchen. Beti is learning how to bake and make salads. She helps clean a little bit and she actually doesn’t have time for anything else… Tomorrow we are going to the forest…The dogs will have plenty of running!
22.12.2005
We tried to walk together and...bingo! A dog we met was completely ignored by Amber (it’s a fact, it was small), and Beti looked at him with love because he is one of her love ones.;)
Teaching Beti staying at home goes pretty well. Beti spent a few hours alone today. When we came back she was sleeping and didn’t really look sad.:) Of course, I could leave Amber to accompany her, but I prefer to teach her stay alone.
21.12.2005
We want to meet other dogs during walks. Every pet is first barked on and then, depending on age and temperament, smelled, chased and bitten. Today Beti played chasing and biting with a half-year old Cocker spaniel. The dog loved it. It jumped like crazy, but his owner was a little scared to see them playing this way. She didn’t let Beti put the dog on its back and bite so that it doesn’t learn the “I give up” position because it would be afraid in the future. I was shocked! My three-month old Beti as a Poznañ terror.;) Well, the Cocker spaniel is kept on a leash all the time because it does not come when called.
20.12.2005
One day was enough for Amber to go back to normal again. He feels much better when we walk alone. Beti and Amber play with each other only in he house and garden.
The dogs helped me bake a ginger bread.;) They were especially helpful with dish washing… Beti is so tiny and quiet, but always knows how to win with Amber! I wanted to check if they like a raw chicken. Beti likes everything, but Amber apparently got to like many things since Beti is with us. Beti got a piece and Amber got the whole chicken neck, big and raw. He took it eagerly and probably WOULD EVEN LIKE it, but he didn’t even have a chance to learn. Beti took the whole thing from his mouth and gobbled it up!!! I hope she will be fine…
19.12.2005
Beti is now three months old! She is so little and we have already had so many exciting adventures! My little wolfs make each other behave in a little bad way. Amber has been protecting Beti from other dogs lately.:( This is why now Amber and Beti walk separately. Amber is more normal and Beti, I think, will finally begin to make friends with other dogs. I have a chance to exercise more having a double portion of walking…;)
Beti brings the sticks I throw during walks exactly as she does with a ball in the house. It was actually much easier with the sticks. Apparently she knows what it is all about now.
Today we learnt the most dog-like command “shake”. Oh, it was difficult at the beginning… We started before dinner so that cooperation was better.;) I took the food, but there was no result. Beti lied down and didn’t even want to think what to do in order to get her treat. Ok, I understand, it’s not worth… Another trial with pork – nothing again! I guess Beti dreamt about dinner.;) I took Beti to a room downstairs and started to pretend that we were going to sleep. Finally, another trial with a deliciously smelling ham… Beti didn’t wait any longer, she begun thinking what to do and… a couple of minutes later she knew what it was all about! Some time later I did the same thing – Beti remembered everything! So we went for the awaited dinner finally. Both, Beti and I, were happy.:)
17-18.12.2005
The weather was better on Sturday so we could finally leave... We met plenty of new puppies this time. During brakes Beti played with her old mates and very carefully got to know new friends. The course in Bydgoszcz starts changing in a dog school.:) There are dogs from 6 weeks old to almost ten months old, of many breeds and colors: a Labrador, a Golden Retriever, a Flat Coated Retriever, a Husky, a Cavalier…
In the old group everybody knows each other. The dogs start playing right away. But a new Labrador and a Flat Coated Retriever joined. Beti kept distance at the very beginning, but a few hours later they chased and bit each other. Beti likes the Husky the most. It is amazing that she plays differently with every dog as if she wanted to fit in to its level and type of playing.
With the Husky they bite each other, with a Cavalier they chase each other wildly and do somersaults, with a lady Lab they bite each other gently, smell, kiss and lick each other. I am happy that Beti learns that she should sit quietly and sleep during a class even when other dogs are around, but can play with them during breaks. Of course we practice a little bit too. When I teach her “stay” I now begin to turn a little bit so that I don’t face her. There is no time for eating during breaks so I feed her during classes. I also use this time to focus her attention which means she gets the food when she looks into my eyes.:)
This exercise makes her more quiet and is ideal for classes because I don’t have to talk to her.;) Another exercise we do is indicating a knee. On my command “knee” Beti puts her nose to my knee. It is a very easy exercise because it uses the dog’s willingness to make us give the food faster. In other words it uses the dog’s forcing.:) Beti learnt how to do it very fast.:)
In the evening when we visited my family Beti was praised by everyone: she became so quiet, she understands so much, she listens and watches, it’s easier to make contact with her, she doesn’t want food from the table, she doesn’t pee on the carpet every five seconds;) etc.
16.12.2005
We wanted to leave on Friday, but instead we had to get rid of snow... There was a snow storm in Poznañ, so there was no chance to leave anywhere.:( But there was one advantage – tones of snow and a long walk.:))) So we went for that unexpected looooong walk which was marvelous! A winter afternoon is an ideal time for hugging. Beti was so cutely tired and sleepy.;) I want to get Beti used to a situation when a person’s hand or head lies on her. It is so nice to hug a dog. I often rest this way with Amber.
15.12.2005
We had a really interesting trip. We visited SCHOOL! Beti loves people and the whole world unconditionally. She liked school too. All teachers were cool because they loved the puppy so much. The pupils were great too because their faces are on a much lower level than the faces of adults.:) Beti kissed everybody and broke their hearts. She didn’t pee at all (well, once but it was because she was so happy). In a classroom she lied down next to a child and rested, kissed and took food from children. She was not scared when children started banging with chairs or hammer in nails. She felt completely relaxed as if school was a natural place for her. Well, maybe she wants to be a teacher…
14.12.2005
Beti has been learning that not everything she finds during a walk can be eaten from the beginning. Of course she can carry and chew sticks and leaves. But plastic bags, papers and other attractive items are not allowed in her mouth. If she happens to take some of the things in her mouth I quickly say “fuj” which apparently works! It is hard for me to believe that Beti is such a good dog when I recall what Amber used to do. After my loud “fuj” she drops what she had found and waits for a treat. She quickly noticed that if she is obedient she is rewarded with a delicious treat which falls right into her mouth.:)
13.12.2005
EVERY walk is a great occasion to practice a couple things. “Come” is of course the most important command for me. I don’t want my dogs to walk as if they took part in a competition, it would be absurd. A walk is supposed to be the time when they relax. If they pull me a little bit...it won’t be a big thing.:) But „come” is the basic command. A dog’s life can be saved if the dog reacts to it. This is why we keep practicing it for times on end.;) Usually when I give a command on a walk I don’t expect the dogs to react right away. Although Amber has been trained for three years he doesn’t always come after the first call. But I know that in most cases (for example when he meets other dogs) I can stop and call him. I also know that I could expect more obedience from him if only I wanted, but Amber is my friend, not a servant who needs to fulfill my needs every time something comes into my head. It doesn’t concern a dangerous situation (like in a street) when I change my tone of voice and then he HAS TO listen to me unconditionally.
It’s a different story with Amber, however. He knows when he should and when he has to.;) Beti has just started learning and this is why I am trying to make a really big thing of every time she comes on my command.
We began practicing “stay” during walks. It is more difficult because Amber runs free right next to her and there are always more interesting things to be done.:) Walking – during today’s walk Beti appeared next to my left side and encouraged me to reward her by looking at me presistantly.:)))
Beti gets her food from everybody in the house. I don’t mean treats, but meals. They also pat her and put their hands into a bowl just as I did in the beginning. For now Beti doesn’t think that a person can take her food. She only protects her bowl from the dogs. We play a ball in the house every day. Amber’s willingness to run and bring the ball helps a lot. Sometimes they race, sometimes I stop Amber and let Beti have a chance.;) Slowly, I am beginning to reward Beti only when she brings the ball to my hand. Of course I help her understand what it all is about at the beginning. I hope Beti will like the ball. She already runs beautifully and we practice more than I did with Amber. The most difficult part is still to be done – going for a walk with a ball. The ball versus the rest of the world.;) But we still have time…
12.12.2005
It was a totally rainy and lazy day. There is really nothing to write about.;)
09-11.12.2005
We had several guests during those three days.:) Although we had some plans we decided not to leave this weekend! The first guests came on Friday. It was only a few people, but on Saturday we had over 20 guests! Beti tried to behave as if she didn’t care about the food on the table. She never makes us give food form the table, but the smell was simply incredible... Beti is forever hungry, she keeps smelling everything all day long.;) How did Beti feel in this confusion? She kept walking among people, let everybody pat her and waited for compliments.:) When the guests left some space in the middle of the room Amber and Beti made their “great rope fight” show which has become a ritual in our hose and which I can look at hours on end! It is a marvelous view.
I am enchanted with Amber’s delicacy and his patience and caring (he has learnt a lot with Beti), Beti is a fast learning student which takes every initiative given by Amber.:) I usually use every situation to introduce certain habits to Beti, to teach her something. My guests cooperated willingly. I didn’t even have to talk them into playing with Beti so that she brings THEM her toys. I also asked them to do some strange things from time to time (some kind of strange move or noise) and to feed her. I didn’t pay too much attention to those elements when I was bringing Amber up so now I am trying to do my best with Beti. It is a nice although difficult exercise to make a dog give back its toys to a person lying on the floor.
I practice it with my little Beti and I will try to make her give toys to other people in the near future.;) On Sunday... we FINALLY WENT TO SCHOOL.:))) We won’t do this systematically, but will try to go there from time to time as often as we can! Beti doesn’t have too much contact with young dogs. She actually has no experience with a group of dogs. This is why school will do her good! There were very few dogs at the first class. They didn’t come because of the rain. We are not afraid of rain (well, maybe a little).;) Beti didn’t make big friends with any of the dogs. There were only he-dogs which were older and had something else in mind… We shall wait for a friend maybe until next class. Beti gets on better with one dog than with a group. This was a small shock for her when all doggies came to say hello.
Training in a group was something new, but Beti learnt very fast that there is time for playing and for practicing. For now we can do very little: we are beginning walking, Beti can do “sit”, “lie down”, and, as it turned out after five days of trials at home and during walks, she can do “stay” a little. Beti really knows how to focus during a class. I was impressed – the first class, a new place, plenty of dogs around and my doggy sits and looks at me.:))) Of course treats were the basis of our cooperation, but anyway...
Another nice thing. My first conversation with a trainer. He asks what kind of dog I came with (Beti was in a car). I hesitate and say that it is not a well known breed, a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog. The guy smiles and says “Great, these are fantastic dogs!” It was so nice and I felt really good that finally the opinion of trainers changes. I hope my Amber has had something to do with it too! The afternoon was also interesting. We visited friends who have a little two-year old daughter Ola and a miniature of a minature dachshund.;) Ola and Beti got on well right away. Ola is amazing in her behavior with dogs, she is not afraid of anything and doesn’t keep any distance. She is simply ideal to teaching dogs how to behave among children. Ola fell in love with Beti (she calls her „my doggey”). Beti kissed her. They saw the house together, played a ball and rested when they finally got tired.
It was a little more difficult to get on well with the dachshund Inka. She protected the family from the two intruders. But finally everything worked between them and I think Inka was happy about it. Beti was a little tired after all the new experience so she let Inka do everything with her! The little Inka (little, but adult) sat on Beti’s head, climbed on her and rolled on her! That was a view!!!
My general impressions are that Beti is very friendly also in new places and with new people. She behaves well when she visits (I don’t count peeing;)) and she already knows what “fuj” or a similar command means. It’s the breeders contribution. A command taught early is like a charm to a dog.;)
08.12.2005
We hit the downtown again.;) It was interesting and a little scary – we went by train! How is it possible that the ground moves? This is not a car...Well, we made it somehow.:) But walking downtown is super! So many people and so many new things! I trained Beti walking in a crowd. She didn’t show a sign of fear. It is the best to train it on a crosswalk when the light turns green and a big group of people starts walking towards us.
07.12.2005
Wednesday is like a holiday in the middle of the week for us. We sleep longer, there is more time for walking and for my favorite naps with the dogs.:) I put a blanket on the floor and Amber already knows it is time to rest together. He waits to see where I am going to lay/lie?? in order to take a strategic position by my side.;) This is the time when I make notes or when we just fool around together. There is time for tenderness and for cosmetic procedures. I examine the dogs’ paws and teeth and try to accustom Beti to brushing and cleaning ears. It just turned out that she broke her milk tooth.:( She didn’t loose her appetite because of that. I hope it doesn’t hurt too much!
The weather is terribly gloomy so after a wet walk it is time for a portion of exercises in the house. We are focusing on walking (a few steps:)) and on staying. It seems that Beti finally knows what it is all about with “stay” or it just happened by chance. She stayed when I stepped back a few times! We also focus on focusing;) which means on making Beti concentrate on me, on keeping the little thunder for a moment.
In the evening we go crazy with a ball! Amber and Beti raced for the ball, no leash was necessary.
Beti galloped to me with the ball only to get her treat! I love that.:)))
06.12.2005
We leave practically every weekend so there is no way we could go to school or other kind of group training.:( It’s a pity because dog school is a great form of socialization with dogs and a fantastic way of building a bond with the owner and learning the basis of obedience. This is why I will have to work more. I try to replace the lack of school in two ways: I go with the dogs to my friends as often as possible and I try to meet as many dogs during walking as possible. Despite that I train Beti as much as I can.
So first I will write about training. There is a meadow close to our house where I have trained Amber and where I am beginning to train Beti. It is a completely different kind of training than at home because there are many more interesting things. It was funny to practice heeling with Beti because I forgot how little a dog can be and Beti tried to reach my hand so she jumped.:) Beti is a huge gourmand which makes her work VERY willingly as long as she has food right in front of her nose.:))) This was the first time we trained “stay”. It wasn’t so easy… How can one stay if one doesn’t understand it and your owner steps back? But it was nice anyway for the firs time. I made Beti stay for a second as I stepped half step back! It may seem very little, but it really is a lot! It is about what I want from her and what she will be rewarded for. As I have written we practice “come” every time we have a walk. Whether she comes or not depends on a day and the level of engagement in the game.;) But today Beti came five times during the walk. She came really fast and with a beautiful smile on her face!!! On this level I try not to call her when I know she will not come. So if she is unleashed I start calling when she faces me and is not busy doing something else. If she is on a leash I call her in every situation even when she is in the middle of a great fun.
Training a small Wolfdog is like slow feeding in several different positions.:) Maybe later I will be able to use a ball as a motivator. A ball is, to me, a great tool in training for several reasons: it gives your dog great pleasure during training. If a dog gets to love a ball it is wild about it.:))) This is the most important thing! Food will never make a dog that happy, but there is another thing, it will also never make your dog react for commands so fast. Another thing – for the ones who like to be clean – a ball doesn’t make your pockets as dirty as gravy treats. But we have to work on a Wolfdog’s ball passion (a Wolfdog-like passion which doesn’t mean giving the ball back to you, but playing it in a relaxed atmosphere) just as we work on retrieving. I have already written that you have to teach a dog chase a ball and bring it back to you since the very beginning. I teach Beti by throwing an interesting toy sitting on a floor in a house. Beti is on a thin leash, when she runs after the toy I call her and try to make her come. If she decides to chew the toy on her own I pull the leash a little bit. It is usually enough to make her come back, of course if she trusts me and knows that I will not take her toy. When she is near me she usually lies down and chews her toy. This is when I say “leave” or “give” and put a piece of a delicious sausage in front of her nose.:))) It always works! Some time later I introduce “leave” when she comes back with her toy, but I always give her a treat in exchange. Playing with Amber I noticed that a ball is most interesting if I have it.;) This is why our ball has a string and we usually pull the ball. Throwing is only a kind of break. The fewer times I throw the more willing Amber is to bring it back.
Wolfdogs easily get bored with a repeated activity. You cannot risk that if you throw a ball the dog will leave it and go play something else. This is why you should never throw a ball more often than 1 or 2 times in one kilometer;) and then go back to pulling. This is how I do it with Amber. I don’t know how Beti will react. But we have time. No hurry. Training has to be pleasurable and joyful for both of you. Only then there is a point in it!
I have written really a lot, but a lot of people write to me asking HOW to do it, HOW did you manage to bring Amber up so well, HOW to work with a puppy. That’s why I am writing how to do it all, step by step.
Going back to the lack of dog school. We are working on socialization gradually. Our many trips and contact with other dogs help a lot, but it is still too little. That’s why we all go visit friends and try to cope with every new situation.
Today we visited a handsome Lab Baldur. He was Amber’s friend when they were both puppies. Now he is three years old, but still behaves like a puppy.:) We were in his area. At first the dogs smelled each other and kept a distance. You couldn’t even tell that a few moments later they would play like crazy. Oh, how they played! Running around the rooms, biting and pushing! It was really something to watch. I only take Beti for such visits so that she couldn’t count on Amber’s help. I want her to build her own position. With Amber she will always be super brave.:)
05.12.2005
Beti and I visited „big white dogs”. I mean the hairy offspring of Undi and Zefir. Beti was shocked. Such big puppies – it’s impossible.;) She felt a little overwhelmed with the pack of white coat and made a beautiful punk hairstyle on her back. There was too little space so they didn’t really have a chance to play although she almost begun to get on well with one of the girls...
During an evening walk Beti got really muddy. There is already an thaw here in the west.;) I clean the dogs’ paws after every walk which is good to practice patience and try to get the dogs used to cosmetic procedures. This time Beti was temporarily not allowed in the house so that there was not plenty of sand in the house. The sand is everywhere anyway.;) Wolfdogs’ fur is really great. No matter how dirty it is when the dirt dries out it always fells off.:))) if it is not enough you can always comb your dog, but you don’t have to wash it, the fur is not stuck together and, most importantly, it doesn’t smell like a wet dog. I actually never wash my dogs. There is no need to. Amber is combed once a week, but for a completely different reason. Of course I have to wash the dog if it rolls in some smelly stuff! I don’t know whether the lack of smell is a remnant after wolfs or not. There is some kind of smell, but it doesn’t bother me. It would be strange if it did.:) I can even tell that I love Amber’s smell.;))) The fact that a dog doesn’t have to be washed is not only comfortable for the owner, but also good for the dog. You do not get rid of the protective layer – a well oiled skin. Thanks to this protection your dog is immune to mycosis, infections, etc.
Beti is now fine after her stomach problems yesterday. Now she has a double appetite and my dog is happy again.:)
02-04.12.2005
Bydgoszcz welcomed us with wind and cold temperature. But the atmosphere and the pace of classes warmed us up. There were some interesting topics and exercises for me and a few dogs to play for Beti including her favorite Lab Ferdi.:) There were amazingly many exercises and a great socialization.:) Every time we are there we meet new dogs and make new friends. Last time a Husky was “in” now, it’s time for Ferdi.:) Amber was rather bored despite the fact that he had an important task – watching Beti. He can sleep the whole day if only he is given some time to run. We had a great experience. The hall was being renovated so the dogs were able to learn what ladders, scaffolding, a foil (in which they loved chasing) and guys who were really high on the ladders. I must admit that Beti coped with the new items much better. She did nothing of them while Amber was a little stressed.
I like evenings with my family the most. Children playing with the dogs, throwing balls, ritual feeding and the children’s joyful waiting for the dogs to come again! Thanks to the many visits at other houses my dogs are well behaved. My dogs don’t jump on people’s sofas, don’t hang around at the table and wait until they are called. I don’t want to boast, but I haven’t seen too many Wolfdogs that would be easily controlled and not troublesome in others’ houses. Well, probably it is nice to have a wild animal which steals from the table and gallops on sofas. I really want my dogs to be well behaved. Good behavior doesn’t make them any less happy or lively. They are controllable, though. Of course this should be worked on from the very first day the puppy is in a new house.
Beti was happy and joyful for two days. She was close to people and kissed everyone. On the third day she was sick and became really nasty. She growled and didn’t let anybody touch her.:( She showed her second bad face.;)
I am happy that my dog can spend so much time with strangers and doesn’t look for me all the time. She plays with others as willingly as with me. Of course, as every Wolfdog does, she walks around the house with me. Amber is the most interesting during walks, but she already knows that it’s worth coming to me to get a treat. She feels comfortable in a room full of people, but it is easy to call her and give a treat.:) Well, it’s not possible if she can’t hear anything because she lies under Ferdi.;)
01.12.2005
A downtown tour continues. Today we went to a railway station! It turned out that this is also an extremely interesting place full of people, unexpected number of different smells, some food at the platforms (unfortunately) and a new thing – pigeons! Beti was patted by all kids that we met there. “It is so nice”, they said.:) Even adults smile when they see a puppy.:)))
We waited at the platform until a train came. And so it did, huge and chugging. But I kept giving Beti her treats so why should she bother that there is a train coming? We trained “sit” and “lie down” at engine. Beti provoke everybody to play with her. Every hand reaching her made her so happy. Additionally, she didn’t pee at all at the railway station which means she behaved perfectly because she keeps peeing in other places.
A railway station is a perfect place for training because it is such a busy place all the time. People come and go. In the end I decided to go by an elevator. This is the first time Beti stopped. She didn’t want to get in at first. She finally did when I showed her a treat. It turned out to be a great place because some children came with us!
I can finally see that Beti grew. Now she is over 12kg and is really heavy after dinner.;) During the day she is thin and little. She still has her delicate puppy-like coat, but I can already see the real fur growing.
Unfortunately we are leaving for the weekend again. We will come back with new experience about which we will write right when we come back…
